The Art of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe HC

In 1982, the world was introduced to He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. What followed was a cultural sensation that changed the landscape of children’s entertainment forever! Join Mattel and Dark Horse in this comprehensive retrospective chronicling He-Man’s decades-long, epic journey from toy, to television, to film, to a true pop culture phenomenon!

Talk about a book that has so much power to bring a kid of the 80’s back to his childhood.  I honestly lost myself for who knows how long in page after page of something that still holds power over my inner child.  For myself and many other folks who take the time to read The Art of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, it is time so unbelievably well spent.

This classic hero all began as shown with behind the scenes memos and other documents, as an idea for a new line of action toys.  Quite a few concepts and looks were considered before the final products of He-Man and the multitude of characters in the collection that we get to see.  There’s even a chapter devoted to the mini-comics that came with the toys, which I have to say had me going OMG I remember that now!  Like so many hot toys, it naturally moved into the cartoon series I grew up watching, comics and magazines, and even that unfortunate failure of a live action film.  Proving how influential the series is, reimaginings and new versions into the 90s and even today with new cartoons, comics, and even toys still keep He-Man very much alive.

Let me just say that a book all about the art behind He-Man truly deserved to be over 300 pages and were all worth every one.  With this much book to work with, there really are no stones left unturned.  Everything from the artwork for creating the toys, in depth looks into the cartoon, and virtually everything in between are shown here.  If ever there was a book to have for reference on He-Man or just hero designs in general, or even to visually revisit your youth, this is it.

I cannot even describe the feeling I had while reading this and how I felt upon completion.  This is a book I will most likely read multiple times just because there’s just so much to it.  I would 110% recommend this book to everyone, highly to those who grew up with He-Man and even those who should see what they missed.
