We join issue #4 of Tarzan on the Planet of the Apes as Tarzan, Caesar, and Innes stand poised to lead their combined forces into the the main city of the Mahar to destroy the final portal to other worlds that lays at it’s center.
Once they battle their way to the portal chamber, Innes is killed and Caesar is forced through the still open portal. With no other means of escape, Tarzan is also forced to flee through the portal as Milo stays behind to ensure it’s destruction. On the other side Tarzan finds himself alone on the iconic beach from the Planet of the Apes. As he moves inland, he soon encounter a group of armed apes, bring us full circle to the opening pages of issue #1.
We learn of Caesar’s doings after coming through the portal, as well as the fate of Dr Milo. We are also introduced to Dr Zaius, or reacquainted with him if you are already familiar with the Apes franchise.
This was a fast moving issue, but it still managed to cover a lot of ground without feeling like we’ve missed something. The art continues to be great, and the colouring adds a very distinct element to it as opposed to just adding colour.
This issue gets a 3.5 out of 5 from me. Even without actually “missing” anything, the pace still felt a bit rushed. The story comes to a close with issue #5, so it will be nice to finally see Tarzan ACTUALLY on the Planet of the Apes.
