Welcome back to the aforementioned article series that has been on hiatus for a few months. Not by choice so much as necessity. February’s AZ Eventure Con (which I was a promoter of) was awesome way back in February, but it was also a launching date for my Kaiju Epic! Kickstarter. Not long after that I was back on the road again with Aspen Comics and hitting the convention circuit! As I mentioned in Part 8, comics never stop and sometimes you have to choose between comics and other portions of life. So unfortunately I had to step away while I ran Big Dog Ink. But now I have a more regular schedule in life with only a few convention stops left for 2017 and it’s time to get back to talking about creating comics and how exactly I did it

So Critter and Penny for Your Soul were both up and ...

KAIJU EPIC! is the newest title from publisher Big Dog Ink, and a pet project for lead writer, Tom Hutchison. Kaiju Epic! is grounded in the campy, fun-loving genre of the giant monster, such as Godzilla or Gamera, but this particular story also adds a bit of “real” kaiju to the mix, as well as legends of the end of days from around the world. Readers will find monsters they may have heard of, like the Kraken or even Quetzalcoatl, roaming the pages of Kaiju Epic!, but there will also be all-new monsters created just for this series.

Kaiju Epic! will be a 5 volume series each with two separate stories. These stories will take place on opposite ends of the globe and give a real feeling of the end of the world, rather than the destruction of a specific city...

Comics never stop. Well, that’s not entirely true, but the comic book world never stops.

And that’s why I’ve missed some time here. While I write comics (and novels now, as well) I also work at a comic book shop in Arizona AND and now a show runner for a brand new comic book event, also in Arizona. The point here is simply that life will always throw distractions at you, but the comic book world will chug on…with or without you. And that was something I was very aware of as I was getting my start.

Critter was coming along, but slowly. Because I had no real timeline, and I had a regular 9-5 job at the time, I wasn’t concerned with finishing the first issue by any specific date. I was more content with letting the artist have all the time he needed to make the book awesome...

Penny for Your Soul. A book that would become what I was known for over the next two years. Maybe that was good, maybe it wasn’t. But what it was was a hell of a story that basically told the tale of “What if the End of Days were to take place in Las Vegas?” While Critter was still under way, Penny for Your Soul was just starting to blossom. It took my creative mind to corners that Critter wouldn’t dare enter…though I did do a two part Critter/Penny for Your Soul crossover in the Critter series. That was fun.

Fun.

Let’s stop for a minute. Let’s talk about that word, because it’s a word that I use often when I describe my stories to people at shows or online. It’s a word that I think describes the comic books that I grew up reading in the 70’s and 80’s...
