Writer: Tini Howard & Ryan Cady
Artist: Christian DiBari
Colorist: Mike Spicer
Publisher: Top Cow/Image

For centuries, the Spear of Destiny that pierced Christ’s side on the cross has been passed down to the women who possess the blood of Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene. Recognized by the church as the Magdelena, these women protect the secular world from demons, but in recent years, fading faith in the church has given the armies of Hell an advantage. After being wounded in battle, Patience, the current and longest serving Magdalena finds herself unable to wield the Spear of Destiny and must seek out a successor.

That successor is Maya Dos Santos in Anaheim, California, where it just so happens a sorcerer by the name of Weyer Blackwood is summing Princes of Hell to wreak havoc on the c...

Spy Seal #1

Story / Art / Cover: Rich Tommaso

“THE CORTEN-STEEL PHOENIX,” Part One Journey into the thrilling world of international espionage as one of Britain’s most covert MI-6 divisions, The Nest, recruits a brand-new secret agent to their team: SPY SEAL! An exciting new comic series—reminiscent of The Adventures of Tintin and Usagi Yojimbo—and created by SHE WOLF author, RICH TOMMASO.

When looking up some details about this comic I found out something interesting about it.  Apparently the creator had made this character when he was 13 and his fans encouraged him to make comics based on the character.

The major highlight of this book is the art.  The creator has such a clean and fun cartoony style that fights well with the anamorphic spy action going on.

Also, it’s very much a more old ...

The Hard Place #1

Writer: Doug Wagner

Publisher: Image Comics

After 5 years in prison for a failed bank robbery, AJ Gurney is ready to fix his life. Settling old debts and working with his pop as a mechanic, things are tough, but he’s determined to stick with it; until his old life gives him no other choice.

The Hard Place is immediately captivating with a striking visual style, likable characters, and naturalistic dialogue. It takes the typical story of a crook trying to set his life straight but getting pulled back in, and makes it feel fresh and engaging.

The colors by Charlie Kirchoff are what really sets the look of The Hard Place apart. Bright, contrasting primary colors make every scene pop...

Funny note, I actually bought this comic before it was given to me to review.  When I have a light comic week (when not a lot of my regular books haven’t come out) I like to check out what new is out and give it a try.

I saw Elsewhere, saw Jay Faerber’s name and Amelia Earhart on the cover and I was...

Redlands #1

Writer: Jordi Bellaire
Artist: Vanesa R. Del Rey
Colors: Jordi Bellaire

Redlands is dark, nasty, and haunting. In the town of Redlands, Florida in 1977, three witches escape from a lynching by the local police and lay siege to the officers now hiding inside, terrified of what might be in the dark just outside their precinct as the lynching tree burns. What follows is a nightmare of murder, demons, and fear.

The first issue of Redlands feels very much like it’s the prologue to a horror movie, showing the horrible thing that happened in the past to a town that still bears scars, except by the end of the issue, that’s been turned on its head. The police officers reveal themselves to be such vile people, that it’s easy to side with the witches who plan to murder them all and take their town...
