Redlands #1

Writer: Jordi Bellaire
Artist: Vanesa R. Del Rey
Colors: Jordi Bellaire

Redlands is dark, nasty, and haunting. In the town of Redlands, Florida in 1977, three witches escape from a lynching by the local police and lay siege to the officers now hiding inside, terrified of what might be in the dark just outside their precinct as the lynching tree burns. What follows is a nightmare of murder, demons, and fear.

The first issue of Redlands feels very much like it’s the prologue to a horror movie, showing the horrible thing that happened in the past to a town that still bears scars, except by the end of the issue, that’s been turned on its head. The police officers reveal themselves to be such vile people, that it’s easy to side with the witches who plan to murder them all and take their town...

The Divided States of Hysteria #1

WRITER: Howard Chaykin
ARTIST: Howard Chaykin
COLOURS: Jesus Aburtov
LETTERING: Ken Bruzenak

In a not too distant future, the American president and most of his cabinet have been assassinated in a failed coup. A world in disarray, CIA operative Frank Villa senses another imminent threat to Washington looming.

Dark in tone and graphic in scenery, The Divide States of Hysteria is not a comic for any who would shy away from the darker side of humanity. Bordering between surreal and all too real as it takes us on its ominous journey, the tale leaps from one character to the next, quickly running through a cast of some of the society’s filthiest lowlifes before transitioning to the next miscreant.

Our central character is quickly revealed to be less than the upstanding operative that one may e...

Mage Vol. 1: The Hero Discovered

Writer/Artist: Matt Wagner
Colors: Jeromy Cox & James Rochelle
Inks: Sam Keith
Publisher: Image

After Kevin Matchstick meets Mirth, the World-Mage, he develops powers and discovers he is the hero who will fight in a war of good against evil alongside his companions, a young girl called Edsel, and a ghost named Sean, against the Umbra Sprite, a force of concentrated evil, and his five children, the deadly Grackleflints.

I did not have a pleasant experience reading Mage. I’ll get into why later in the review, of course, but to give away the game here, I didn’t like it. My conclusion was that it was clearly someone’s first attempt at a comic, that their writing and art would improve over time, and so I didn’t want this review to be too much of a take-down...

Samaritan Veritas #2

Writer: Matt Hawkins
Artist: Atilio Rojo
Publisher: Image

Samaritan Veritas #2 picks up with Samaritan and her team of mercenaries kidnapping the one man who might have dirt on President McKitrick so they can humiliate him and put him in prison before killing him, making sure he doesn’t die a martyr. The action is kicked up a notch, and things within the FBI start to become complicated as they realize the search for Samaritan might not be as easy as they originally thought.

The supporting cast is fleshed out just a bit as there’s more of a focus placed on the mercenary group working with Samaritan. It’s a little unclear if they’re motivated by ideology or just profit, but there’s a brief scene between Samaritan and Lando, and we follow Picard for a good portion of this issue...
