Grand Rapids Comic Con 2018

Grand Rapids Comic ConOnce again, Devos Hall played host to Grand Rapids Comic Con this year and once again, I was impressed. The weather was a bit ewww, but that didn’t stop people from coming out and enjoying all of the fun that the show had to offer. Let’s break it down:

The Good:

The show has continued to expand and while things weren’t always quite where I expected them to be, the staff (some wearing superhero capes!) that I spoke to were all friendly and willing to point me in the right direction.  Everyone seemed relaxed and happy to help, which, from experience, I can tell you isn’t always the case. I also appreciated most of the layout of the vendor floor...

The Power of the Daleks (animated)

powerofdaleks1

For those less versed in Whovian lore, The Power of the Daleks is the first full story to feature Patrick Troughton as the Second Doctor.  It aired in 6 weekly episodes from November 5 until December 10, 1966.  Sadly, the entirety of this serial was lost during the BBC’s archive purge in the late ’60s and early ’70s.  All that remains of the original footage are a few very short video clips that were used for other things, some still pictures, and the complete broadcast audio.  This is where we now pick up the narrative.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Power of the Daleks, the BBC has taken that original broadcast audio track and animated all six episodes, releasing the results in the UK starting on November 5, 2016, and to the rest of the world in the weeks since...

Doctor Who: The Ninth Doctor #6

Welcome back to the 70s (or is it the 80s?)! The Doctor becomes entangled once more with the forces of UNIT when a cache of potentially devastating top secret material is leaked to the media. But does the UNIT whistleblower have a point? Alien invasion and internecine intrigue combine in an explosive new story!

I think I’ve finally pinned down what irks me about the writing in Ninth Doctor #6: there’s something about the way the characters keep throwing in extraneous information whenever they speak. The typical rule for comic book dialogue is, “trim the fat” – simple and elegant is best. If you have to explain something, do it clearly and straightforwardly. Instead, Ninth Doctor’s characters tend to – in the very apt British phrase – “natter on” quite a bit.

I’m all fo...

Doctor Who: The Third Doctor #1

Paul Cornell returns to Doctor Who comics with THE HERALDS OF DESTRUCTION! When something enormous crashes into Bedfordshire, the Doctor, Jo Grant, and the forces of UNIT under Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart mobilise immediately – and find themselves in the middle of a pitched battle against a terrifying invader… But the shocking face that awaits their return to base may tip the whole world off its axis!

It’s classic Third Doctor action as you’ve never seen it before!

I’m not versed in the history of all the Doctors on Doctor Who; the Third Doctor is really quite different from any of the other Doctors I’ve seen. Instead of operating alone, with a companion along for the ride, this Doctor appears to be attached to British military intelligence, or at least a branch thereof...
