Gen Con 2015

I have a confession to make. As nerdy as I am, I never thought I’d go to an event like GenCon.

I honestly don’t exactly know what to write, it was an enormous event, and no matter how much I wrote I will have missed more then I touch on. That actually was a bit of a theme for my weekend. Through a variety of circumstances I think I ended up missing more games than I actually played.

As I may have mentioned this was my first GenCon, and GenCon is kinda big. So I spent most of my first day trying to find my way around. I was scheduled to compete in the Munchkin tournament, but 45 minutes of looking for the tables later I had missed it...

Gen Con 2015

gen-con-logoFor the first time ever, this past weekend, Geek-o-Rama had a presence at Gen Con! David’s post will be coming soon, but for now, let me tell you all about my experience! I’ve never attended a gaming convention so there were nerves, excitement, and more than a little exhaustion all involved before I even got there!

Honestly, I hadn’t even planned on attending this event. David’s press badge was secure and the finances just weren’t in place for me to go.  Imagine my surprise when David offered to share his hotel room, Stacia with Gen Con told me it was no problem to get a last minute badge, and some amazing people donated the money to make this all happen! Somehow, everything fell into place and late on Thursday, I was headed down to Indianapolis!

Gen Con, for those of you who haven’t atte...

CosFest 2015 took place in Mesa, Arizona on July 25th.

The first thing that I really noticed about the event was that the organization was abysmal. I had a media pass, but I needed to purchase a ticket for my husband. The Facebook event page for Cosfest had a notice that you could PM or email Candie’s Characters, the people running/sponsoring the event, for discount tickets. It took them three days to answer my initial email, and several more days to send me the ticket (I didn’t get the ticket until the morning of the event, when I’d emailed about a week in advance). That wasn’t a very pleasant first contact experience, and I think it colored my view of the event going into it.

The event was held in a space that is basically a huge warehouse...

Otafest 2015

Otafest 2015
May 15-17

David Chapman - 1

I have a confession to make.  I’m NOT an anime guy, at least not in modern terms.  I remember fondly Astroboy, and Robotech on tv, and having to trade VHS tapes of varying quality.  I’m old.  Yet off I go to Otafest, Calgary’s biggest anime festival.

Otafest takes place on the beautiful grounds of the University of Calgary, which while beautiful makes finding your way around as a first timer a little challenging. They had ample signage, but it was sometimes placed awkwardly, almost to the point of inaccuracy.  That aside, I eventually found my way to pickup my badge and I was on my way.

First stop for me was the Vendor Hall.  There I found a collection of props, costumes, DVDs, and a personal favorite of mine The Attic & Attic Raiders...
