Dollface #4

The tables have turned now on Dollface and the gang, as Zombie Tramp tries to take each one of them out. Are Lila and Ivan ready to deal with such a powerful witch this early in the game?

As great as the concept may be, not every crossover ends up actually being a good idea. Fortunately, this is one that combines two of best titles, and characters out there. Well, that may just be my opinion, but most will agree Dollface and its fourth issue is excellent.

With the Necronomicon in her hands, Zombie Tramp is scarier than usual as team Dollface tries to take her on. With her magic and a graveyard of bodies at her disposal, Janey seems unstoppable. Using almost every trick they can, Lila and Ivan manage to combine tactics to finally come out the victors.

It’s violent, it’s vibrant, it’s al...

Strange Fruit

During the Great Flood of 1927 in Chatterlee, Mississippi, the River is rising as fast as the racial and social tensions in town. But when an otherworldly being falls from the sky and challenges everything these divided people know, it changes things . . . forever.

This was one of those books that I really had no idea of what to expect, even a handful of pages in. The combination of actual events and fiction that we see within is pretty intriguing though. Whether you know of the historical component, the fictional side of Strange Fruit is what will naturally draw you in.

A good amount of what we see in this title is very likely accurate to things that really would have occurred...

Eternal Warrior Awakening #1

It is a time before civilization…On the brink of carving out victory in the most violent battle of his life, Gilad Anni-Padda suffers a devastating injury. He awakens weeks later in a strange land, nursed back to health but with no memory of his past. A tribe has shown him compassion in an age of cruelty, and he will return their gift in kind. Now the real violence will begin…

While you could say it for any comic, a one-shot in particular is more of a crapshoot than usual. Sometimes you’ll run into one that can truly stand on its own, sometimes not. As for the Eternal Warrior Awakening, it was a shaky start but closed out just strong enough.

At first, the (re?)introduction of Gilad Anni-Padda aka the Eternal Warrior could be confusing for those who don’t know him, like me...

Magdalena #1-2

After the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ, Mary Magdalene, reputed to be his wife, gave birth to a daughter, Sarah.  From this child is descended the holy lineage of the Magdalena, a royal bloodline that passes great power and great honor from mother to daughter.  For over 2000 years, the Knights of Malta have trained one special woman in each generation to be the Magdalena — the official warrior protector of the Catholic Church.  Across the millennia, the Magdalenas have battled in secret, protecting humanity from the supernatural threats and evil that would tear our world apart.

I’m not a big fan of the whole Dan Brown/History Channel mythos (ancient Catholic secrets, Jesus’ kids, Knights of Whatever, etc.); I was pretty reluctant to give Magdalena a try...
