Spencer & Locke #4

The end is nigh, as Spencer and Locke square off against Locke’s crime lord father, Augustus, with a child’s life hanging in the balance! Can Locke survive against these overwhelming odds? Does he even want to? And who killed Sophie Jenkins? Find out here in this explosive finale!

A finale to anything, whether it’s a show or a series of novels or comics, is something to both anticipate and dread. You thirst for that big ending to the story, yet at the same time you wish it wasn’t ending. When it comes to the fourth and final issue of Spencer & Locke, I was torn more than I have been in a while.

The dreaded meeting between Locke and his ironically criminal father has come and it’s as rough as you’d expect...

The Power of the Dark Crystal #5

While Jen and Kira deal with the chaos the Skeksis have wrought on the castle, Thurma and Kensho are out in the wilds of Thra on the run from the Crystal Guard, unaware that something far more treacherous followed their trail: the Chamberlain.

There are few occasions where I’ve felt the need to start off in atypical fashion and immediately speak of the cover of a book. Had this been the first thing I ever saw from this series, I’d have been pulled in just because of the wonderful outer artwork. Fortunately, this fifth issue of The Power of the Dark Crystal is far from the first thing and hopefully far from the last.

Dollface #6

Still in SoCal, Lila and the gang decide to do a little sunbathing at the local beach. But things take a turn for the worst when witches—Orla’s cronies—come after them.

Everybody deserves a little R&R once in a while, even witch hunting teams, right? Just kick back, maybe catch some rays and get away from it all. You would think so, but that just doesn’t seem to be the case for Lila and company in Dollface issue six.

After fighting SoCal traffic, the gang finally gets to the beach to have a great day in the sun. Much to their dismay, minions from the witch they last encountered them have tracked them down. An all out brawl ends up sadly taking the life of Emily’s girlfriend Paige, reminding Lila of a hard lesson she learned in her previous life.

Although it was short lived, this issue...

Hero Cats: Midnight Over Stellar City Vol 2 #2

Dr. Ross Rex breaks out of the Taurus County Jail and our favorite Hero Cat must uncover his master plan.  Return with us to Stone City as Midnight, Cassiopeia, Belle, Eastly and his people prepare for the upcoming war.

If you told me years ago I’d be regularly enjoying books that feature a team of heroic cats I’d probably have laughed. Granted, there are far more bizarre things that could and have been pitched. Luckily the offshoot Hero Cats: Midnight Over Stellar City and issue two of its second volume is anything but.

One of the escaped villains, Dr Rex, shows up at the Quest home and creepily gets the nanny involved in his evil plot. Midnight, Cassiopeia and eventually Belle track him to his lair, learning of the plan to use the Echo Chamber for nefarious reasons...

Sombra

Written by Justin Jordan (The Strange Talent of Luther Strode) and illustrated by Raúl Treviño (Tinkers of the Wasteland), Sombra is a gripping exploration of the War on Drugs and the double-edged sword of American intervention, informed by Treviño’s experiences in his Mexican homeland. Conrad Marlowe was a respected DEA agent when he disappeared in Mexico while investigating the ruthless drug cartels. Years later, he has resurfaced as a cult leader who has made it his mission to out-brutalize the cartels terrorizing the country. The only DEA agent willing to follow his trail of violence is his own daughter, Danielle, and with the help of a journalist on the ground, she’ll have to face the horrors of what her father has become if she wants to survive and bring him to justice.

Let’s...
