Red Sonja: The Long Walk To Oblivion

The people of Meru are in terrible danger from an ancient evil, and there is only one person who can save them — the Hyrkanian warrior woman, Red Sonja! A lone Meruvian is sent to find Sonja and bring her back east — a treacherous trip that ends in a trap laid by Sonja’s old enemy, the evil wizard Kulan Gath in Red Sonja #0! It’s the adventure set before the new hit series, in this extra-sized one-shot!

This book is a bit odd, because it’s supposed to be the prelude to Issue 0 of the new Red Sonja ongoing.

As you can see below, the page to the left is the end of Long Journey and the one on the right is the end of issue #0.  I call this book odd because Issue 0 came out in December and this book is coming out in May.  It’s just bad timing to have a book come out so out of order chronologically as far as the story as concerned.

Another odd bit is that there isn’t much mention of this book’s tie to Issue 0 of the new series.  It’s mentioned once in the solicitation copy and then another time with the prologue text on the inside cover.  Considering how much it’s tied to issue 0 it’s odd not to mention that fact more prominently.

That last bit of odd business of this book is that’s it’s 5.99 for 40 Pages and is labeled as a One-Shot on the cover.  The issue it leads into, Issue 0, is 25 cents for 24 pages.  I understand that Dynamite made the 0 issue only a Quarter to get people to try the book, but then why is the pricing so high for this tie in?

I just find the price a steep for considering it’s not a complete story (it ends rather suddenly with Red Sonja and the villain just disappearing and the other characters left scratching their head.)

I hate to do this again but the color over pencils again ruins the book for the art.  Below is some of Tom Mandrake’s art from pencils, inks, and colors.  Also is a page from this comic.

As you can see with the first example Mandrake’s art really pops and the details are kept intact.  In Red Sonja the details are lost and everything gets muddied as the color seems to be plopped onto the page.

It’s frustrating because this is a good fun action story for Sonja to run around in and be bad ass, but considering the odd ending and the color issues it stays as a good story and not a great story.

I give it a 3 out 5.
