Oh My Goddess! Omnibus Book 1 TPB

College student Keiichi Morisato thought it was a prank when a strange, beautiful young woman appeared in his dorm room one night. But his unexpected visitor is literally a goddess from heaven, Belldandy, come to grant him any single wish of his choosing. When Keiichi wishes for Belldandy to stay with him forever, it’s the beginning of a complicated, cosmic saga of comedy and romance that makes for one of manga’s greatest love stories!

In all the years I’ve been into anime and manga, I still have yet to touch upon some of the classics. Some of them just weren’t in my original batch of interest, some I’ve just had in my “to watch or read” list forever. After being fortunate enough to read the first ever omnibus for Oh My Goddess!, I can finally and proudly say I’ve at least experienced some of it.

For those in the same boat as me with little or maybe even no knowledge of Oh My Goddess!, it’s a classic romance/comedy series. After Keiichi Morisato makes his one wish from the goddess Belldandy, she becomes his eternal companion. From there, it is an endless chain of funny and romantic events for the two as they live together and try to survive college life. Whether it be Keiichi’s motor club hijinx, Belldandy nearly always saving the day with her magic, and the unexpected arrival of Belldandy’s naughty older sister Urd, the fun never stops.

Of the various titles that I’ve read for manga, which is far less than that of those anime I’ve watched, this is one of the oldest. That classic style definitely shows as you go through this large book, and it’s a wonderful trip through time. Although most of the book is of course black and white, there are some beautifully colored bonus pages mixed in as well. Unlike some books where some of the flow is tough to follow, this is one that you’ll have no trouble with.

From chapter to chapter, I could see why this is a favorite for so many people. While romantic comedies may not be everyone’s favorite, this is just such an enjoyable title that you can’t help but love it. I’m truly pleased that they are collecting these in omnibus form years later, and so glad I got to read the first one. I would highly recommend picking up this book no matter your experience with the genre, and of course more so if you are a fan.
