Munchkin: Christmas Lite

The festive holiday season is upon us. Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Yule, Solstice, Festivus, toss in things like Boxing Day, the Chinese Lantern Festival, New Years, and probably a few things I’m missing, and it’s a busy time. But whatever you celebrate, it’s also a time for friends and family to gather and make merry. What better way to show your compassion for your fellow gamer then by stabbing them in the back and possibly stealing their stuff. Well now you can do exactly that with Steve Jackson Games annual Christmas offering: Munchkin: Christmas Lite.

For years Munchkin has released a variety of Christmas themed products to celebrate the season. These have ranged from Booster sized sets, to dice, coins, bookmarks, Christmas cards, and more. This years offerings include Stocking Stuffers, the Munchkin Yule Log game board (exclusive to BAM, making it very expensive to ship to Canada), a full Nightmare Before Christmas set (because dammit it’s a Christmas movie too), and Christmas Lite.

I was, and still am, very excited about Christmas Lite. Munchkin has put out a number of booster sized Christmas sets in the past, and they have the basic Munchkin set back on them, so they match seamlessly with the original Munchkin game. Here’s the catch, I almost never play the original Munchkin set. Nothing against it, I just more often play some of the other sets that have different backs. That means, the booster sets would stick out like a sore thumb for my games. So I’ve quietly collected and appreciated them, but never played them. Enter Christmas Lite. A 112 card complete Christmas Munchkin game, with the basic back. I can now play Christmas Munchkin!

For those of you who may not know Munchkin, it is basically a dungeon crawling game, minus all the roleplaying stuff. You start at level 1 and win by reaching level 10. To do this you kick down doors, fight monsters, obtain treasure, and helping or hindering the other players as you advance. As the game goes on, you may gain a race, class. and other traits, weapons and armour to help you defeat the Monsters. These Monsters include such terrors as a Christmas Ham, Bear Clause, and Bad King Wenceslas.

I only have one issue with this set. Because it’s only 112 cards, not a full 168, they released it in a standard tuck box instead of a regular Munchkin box. So for people like me who have the past Christmas sets there isn’t room to add them. I solved this by buying a couple of roughly card sized gift boxes from the dollar store, one for each of the two decks.

If you are already a Munchkin fan, Christmas Lite is a great addition to your collection. If you are new to the world of Munchkin, it is a wonderful introduction to the game. Either way check it out, and have a jolly old time!
