One of the fun things about going to Cons, is that sometimes you find some amazing new games. BetaBotz is one of those games that I came across at the Emerald City ComiCon.
In BetaBotz you spend ten rounds building and improving your robot, while attempting to complete Mission cards and gaining rewards.
Throughout the game you will use your Bits to bid on component cards to improve the base stats of your robot. Bits act not only as currency for bidding, but also as your victory points at the end of the game. This makes balancing your bidding with your end gains more challenging.
Mission cards change in difficulty as the game progresses, and you can team up with other players to both share in the victory and split the rewards. Likewise there are cards that allow you to help beef up you bot, or hinder your opponent’s bot. Things got pretty cutthroat in the game I played, but in a fun lighthearted cutthroat way.
At this point Zagar Games only seems to be shipping to the US, which is disappointing. But as a new company it certainly is an understandable, logistical, decision. I also think the base reward price might be a touch high, but it looks to include shipping so it’s not really that bad. There are some really fun higher level reward levels as well.
Being in Canada, I can’t personally back this one without jumping through some shipping hoops. But I’m going to be looking at options, because I really did enjoy the demo game I got to play and think my friends will enjoy it as well.
