Jughead #1

IN THE GRAND TRADITION OF COMIC BOOK REBOOTS LIKE ARCHIE #1, ARCHIE COMICS PROUDLY PRESENTS… JUGHEAD #1—FROM THE COMICS DREAM TEAM OF CHIP ZDARSKY (Howard the Duck) AND ERICA HENDERSON (The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl)!

Riverdale High provides a quality education and quality hot lunches, but when one of those is tampered with, JUGHEAD JONES swears vengeance! Well, I mean, he doesn’t “swear.” This is still Archie Comics after all.

Writer:
Chip Zdarsky
Artist:
Erica Henderson

Archie Comics

In the nicest possible way, Jughead Jones is a selfish man. Its part of his charm, but you can’t deny that more often than not, his altruism is brought about by his desire to maintain the rather comfortable life he has found himself in.

The true humour of Jughead #1 comes from Chip Zdharsky, who has introduced the perspective of an adult to the comic and realising that all teenagers are selfish and a bit idiotic. Whilst this may rub some long term fans the wrong way, to see our usual cast of Rivendale highschool act like actual teenagers (even if some traits are played up because of the perspective) is refreshing.

Be it a Game of Thrones inspired daydream, Jughead’s mad dash for food and how he wraps himself up in the schemes of others to preserve it or just the odd word bubble from someone in the background, the sense of comic timing is pretty perfect.

Erica Henderson’s artwork is what helps sell this whole idea though, her stylised lines giving just enough to of a comic feel to things. At the same time there’s a focus on body movement and facial expressions that really make the jokes pay off. The two seem like an ideally paired team for a book with the wicked humour of someone like Zdarsky.

A great debut issue, Jughead #1 needs to be on your shelves now.

Jughead #1 is available from Archie Comics.
