Ever learn anything from a fable? Call it a proverb.
This kid friendly Tale from Jim Henson and Archaia at Boom! will bring sobering smiles.
Jim Henson’s the Storyteller: Sirens #1
Written by Bartosz Sztybor
Illustrated by Jakub Rebelka
Lettered by Jim Campbell
Published by Archaia
Did I read it? Yes and I enjoyed it.
Sztybor’s take on the Mermaid and the Fisherman is bookended appropriately with an introduction to the Storyteller’s dog seeking treats too often. Then the focus shifts to the Fisherman who has shelter, food, money, and a family that only wants his attention. But a Mermaid’s song catches his ear. Following the fable, the Storyteller reveals his temptation.
Rebelka’s art is fine for this story as it targets the whole family. The page layout, however, didn’t work for me. Way too square, line-less, and no bleed area.
Happily, there are three more Sirens stories coming up.
If you buy it and aren’t thrilled, I suggest you have misidentified your personal treat.
I give it 3 of 5 stars.
Look for it in your local comic store or go to Boom online.
