The sell-out and critically acclaimed series returns!
Tales of Ember: long on lore, short on story.
This comic manages to capture the doomy atmosphere of the Dark Souls franchise, but if the creators were going for a sort of Tales from the Crypt anthology, they really didn’t put a lot of effort into it. Calling these fragments “stories” is really pushing the definition – they’re scenes, nothing more. What’s the game here? Will these story bits continue into the next issue, or will it start over with an entirely new set of puzzle pieces?
The art’s all right – sort of Wizards of the Coast-esque, in what I assume is a heavy nod to the Dark Souls games’ concept art. The writing hits all the right Thee’s and Thou’s without doing much to distinguish itself. Overall the comic was vaguely interesting, but there just isn’t a lot of there there.
Ultimately, I got the sense this was another franchise tie-in used to sell Dark Souls games. Not bad as far as these things go, but still lazy.
Final Verdict: 2 out of 5.
