BOOM! Box 2014 Mix Tape 1

We reached out to a bunch of our favorite creators with one mission in mind–to bring original, unconventional characters and stories to life. THE MIX TAPE is an eclectic collection of stories based on characters that are anything but your average lot. Talking hamburgers, misunderstood ghosts, and punk rock grandmas are just the tip of these stories that are best described as “off the beaten track.”

I have to say, as a child of the 80’s the first thing I loved is the title of this book.  I suppose only those of us old enough to understand the cassette mix tape would truly appreciate it.  Either way, just the fact that I love the title is pretty awesome.  Past that of course, I was just really curious to see what exactly was in store for the BOOM! Box 2014 Mix Tape.

Depending on just how widespread your comic reading goes, some of the titles within this compilation you’ll know, some you won’t.  I honestly didn’t know most of them, but was pleased to have been introduced to some new ones.  There were some of course that really didn’t strike a chord for me, but that may be the opposite for others.

With such a varied mix of stories, the art is naturally going to be as eclectic.  Once again, some styles I was keen on, others while good in their own right weren’t favorites for me.  Regardless, it’s always a treat to see new creators and their work, especially all in one bundle.

I’d have to say that as a whole this was a decent read and is worth picking up.  If anything, it’s a great way to possibly find a new favorite title.  I actually found a couple I’d like to see more of, so it did its job for me.  If there are more of these, I think I’ll try and find a walkman just to complete the feel.
