Beneath the Dark Crystal

Writer: Adam Smith

Artist: Alexandria Huntington

Letterer: Jim Campbell

Publisher: Boom! Studios

Synopsis: This is the first of a 12 book series continuing  the story of the beloved story of The Dark Crystal.  The story of Kensho and Thurma continues following The Power of the Dark Crystal.

Review: If you are a fan of the classic film , you will be ready for this introduction to old friends. Like the first scene in a play, the first book of Beneath the Dark Crystal sets the stage, allowing the reader to become reacquainted with familiar characters on the verge of new adventures and decisions.  Alexandria Huntington’s artwork is extraordinary in its fantasy beauty and detail. These are excerpts that should be framed for their beauty. The fantasy lover will immediately fall in love with this comic just for this aspect.  If you are not familiar with the film, this first book leaves a bit of confusion, as there is no adventure and this edition assumes the reader is already familiar with the previous stories behind it.  There is a sense of an incredible story on the horizon, but this is only the introduction before the actual story begins. Toward the end of this edition, the story begins to have an up tempo as opportunities are presented. It will take until the next edition to find out where this leads.

Rating: I give Beneath the Dark Crystal 3 out of 5 stars.

Beneath the Dark Crystal will be available in July 2018 at Boom! Studios.
