Battlepug is a great webcomic at battlepug.com.

As a comicbook, I don’t exactly love it. The page by page punchlines and in-jokes that work so well in a web comic really hurt the print format. Looking at the whole issue, this could have been serioused-up and become a fantasy contender for Conan or Thor audiences. As it is, it opens as a self-contradicting story that is still butt-hurt over the 2016 election.

If Mike Norton had asked, get over it. Nobody escapes into a bound comic to have their faces rubbed in real life. It was great parody and works as one page but you’re out of the story now. The reader has an opportunity to go do something else.

The art riffs on Conan and Inhumans tropes. Smartly designed to feed on what you want in other comics. I like the choices from a business perspective but as a reader I wasn’t looking for a small-legged barbarian.

I give this comical tale 3½ stars of 5. Give it a try.

Ask for it at your local comic shop or go online to find issue #1.
